The settlement began in 1864 when a Shawnee woman named Mary Parks sold her land to David Gee Campbell, a settler from Tennessee. The place was first called Campbellton in his honor. source

Merriam Park, the railroad's 40-acre pleasure park, built by the Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad and dedicated on July 1, 1880 with President Ulysses S. Grant present. Laid out by landscape architect George Kessler - who went on to plan Kansas City's park and boulevard system - it ran from Shawnee Mission Parkway to 65th Street and from Grandview to the railroad tracks, and had a zoo with bear pits, a lagoon for sailboating and winter skating, and a horse-drawn carousel. Webb v. School District No. 90, decided by the Kansas Supreme Court in 1949 and arising from the South Park area of Merriam, is a documented landmark in Kansas legal history and is treated as a 'Prelude to Brown' case by the Brown Foundation - it was decided five years before Brown v.
