The community began as Mission Hill Acres in 1926, when the Breyfogel family subdivided the land into 245 lots and offered them for sale. By 1935 five businesses had opened: a drugstore, a restaurant, a hardware and dry goods store, a barber shop and a cleaning establishment. source
The name. From the Shawnee missions established in this part of Johnson County in the 1830s - the Shawnee Baptist Mission was founded nearby in 1831 and the Shawnee Methodist Mission in 1830, later relocating to the site in present-day Fairway. The subdivision name Mission Hill Acres was shortened to Mission in 1938 on the recommendation of postal authorities. source 1 source 2
