Not an old town that grew - a single planned development. The J.C. Nichols Company, which had built Kansas City's Country Club District from 1908 and moved into Johnson County by 1912, assembled acreage along Mission Road and Tomahawk Road and began building in 1941 on an 80-acre tract bought from the Lewis family. Charles B. Briggs became the first homeowner, buying 3913 West 69th Street in September 1941. Eighty-nine houses were finished before construction stopped in 1942 for the war. source
The name. The J.C. Nichols Company took the name for its first subdivision from the existing Prairie School District #44 and the Prairie School building that stood at 67th Street and Mission Road. source
Incorporated as a third-class city in 1951, ten years after the first houses went up. Ralph A. Brenizer was the first mayor. source
