Established in 1837 on land Congress donated for county purposes, and platted in the spring of that year by Enoch Rice, Francis Prine and Welcome Scott, commissioners appointed by the state legislature in the winter of 1836 after an 1835 act directed that a seat of justice be located within five miles of the county's center. source 1 source 2
The name. Named in honor of Congressman Albert G. Harrison, who was instrumental in obtaining the land grant and was one of the first two U.S. Representatives elected from Missouri. Note the city's own page prints the middle initial as 'J', while other sources give 'G' - worth checking before it goes in print. source
