The Battle of Lone Jack, fought on August 16, 1862, was a Confederate victory that left 270 dead, most of them buried on the battlefield in two trenches each about 80 feet long. A third trench was later found containing at least eighteen more men who died of wounds. source
The fighting took place on the town's main street and lasted about five hours before the Federal force withdrew before a much larger Confederate force. source
The battlefield site holds the only Civil War museum in Jackson County, in a distinctive round native-stone building opened in 1963 on the 101st anniversary of the battle. Its displays cover the battle, the Battle of Westport, General Order No. 11 and Quantrill's raid on Lawrence. source 1 source 2
