The Jackson County Historical Society records the town as laid out on July 25, 1840 by William E. Frick; a post office named Oak Grove has operated since 1840. The town was not formally platted until 1878 and incorporated in 1881. At incorporation it had eleven stores, a school, a church, a livery stable, a mill, a post office and a hotel. source 1 source 2
The name. The settlement was originally called Lickskillet. It was renamed Oak Grove for a grove of oak trees near the original town site when the post office opened. The town still runs an annual 'Lickskillet Community Days' festival on the last weekend in September under the older name. source 1 source 2

- 2017An EF3 tornado with estimated peak winds of 152 mph struck the city on the evening of March 6. The National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill survey recorded a track through Jackson and Lafayette counties; roughly 483 homes and 10-12 commercial buildings were damaged and about a dozen people injured, with no fatalities. source 1 source 2
