Traces to a land grant signed by President John Tyler on May 1, 1843 to William Carpenter. Carpenter's sons Amos and Dan inherited the property and a settlement formed around their general store, known as Carpenter's Store. A post office called Carpenters Store was established in 1858. The town was formally laid out when the railroad reached the site. source 1 source 2

The name. Renamed from Carpenter's Store to Trimble at the end of the 1890s; the post office name changed in 1899. The City of Trimble's own account says the Carpenters consulted a lawyer named Mr. Trimble about formalising the settlement in 1898 and named the town for him. Other accounts attribute the name to J. M. Trimble, an official of the railroad. Both attributions are recorded because the sources genuinely disagree. source 1 source 2
