Created by relocation. When the Chicago and Alton Railroad built through in 1878 it bypassed the existing communities of Pink Hill and Stony Point, and their residents and business owners moved to the new line. Grain Valley was filed on 17 September 1878. source 1 source 2

- 1854Pink Hill, one of the two communities that emptied into Grain Valley, was placed on the map by the United States Post Office - twenty miles east of Independence and three miles north of Oak Grove. It had woodworking shops, a blacksmith, three general stores and a trading post. The other, Stony Point, three miles south of the present town, took its name from the stones in the ground and had a school, a church and the only other trading post in eastern Jackson County, kept by Jacob Gregg. source
- 1877The Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago Railroad received a state charter to build a new line; the city's own account names this as the railroad whose route caused Pink Hill and Stony Point to consolidate and relocate to a midway point the following year. - 1914A newspaper, the Sni-A-Bar Voice, began publication; it ran until 1926. The town's 1889 school building was replaced by a brick school in 1908, which burned on November 7, 1925. source

- 1988A developer bought 1,200 acres of the former Sni-A-Bar Farm in May 1988 to build housing additions, and Grain Valley annexed the ground with his consent. This is the single event that best explains the city's modern subdivision build-out and its 2002 median year of construction. source
