William B. Howard filed a plat on October 28, 1865 laying out 11 blocks - the core of today's downtown - as the Town of Strother, with a population of roughly 100. Howard, a Kentuckian who had come to Jackson County in 1842, platted the town knowing the Missouri Pacific Railroad was surveying a route through the area; the original 11 blocks straddled the tracks. source
The name. Originally 'Strother', for Howard's wife Maria D. Strother. The name had to change because another Missouri town was already called Strother. 'Summit' refers to the town being the highest point on the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis; 'Lee' honors Dr. Pleasant Lea, a prominent early settler - railroad sign painters spelled it 'Lee' rather than 'Lea', and the misspelling stuck. source
